Validate the problem before building everything

Talk to prospective customers about the problem they face and how they currently solve it. Ask about recent behaviour rather than relying only on whether they “like” your idea. Early conversations can reveal whether the problem is urgent enough to pay for.

Describe a specific first offer

Avoid launching with a long list of vague services. Define one offer, its ideal customer, the outcome it aims to support and a clear next step. You can broaden your services once you understand what people actually buy.

Use your existing network thoughtfully

Tell former colleagues, contacts and relevant local business groups what you are offering. Ask for introductions to a particular type of buyer, not a generic request for “any leads”. Do not misuse confidential information or customer lists from previous employers.

Create a credible online presence

A clear website, professional email address and consistent business information help people assess whether to contact you. Publish real contact details and accurate claims. You do not need to pretend to have years of results or invent testimonials.

Try one acquisition channel at a time

Test a small outreach campaign, local partnerships, useful content or a modest advertising budget. Set a goal for qualified conversations rather than vanity metrics. Follow the rules that apply to direct marketing, cookies and personal data.

Ask what stopped people buying

When a prospect says no, respectfully find out whether the issue was timing, fit, trust, price or a missing feature. Use patterns in that feedback to improve your offer. Do not assume more traffic will fix an unclear proposition.

Build a simple follow-up system

Keep a record of enquiries, next actions and outcomes. Respond promptly and make it easy to book a conversation. As you win customers, ask for honest feedback and referrals when appropriate.
